PAVILION RETAIL

Prague

The Pavilion in Prague, originally designed by Antonin Turek in 1903 as a factory, served as a marketplace throughout most of the 20th century. However, a fire in 1980 forced its closure. Recognized as a historic structure, the building was saved from demolition and underwent extensive renovation and restoration. All the original steel was kept within the space and any added steel was colored to match the existing. Other historical aspects of the structure like the exposed brick in the basement and a wheel from the engine room were kept honoring the original building. Today, it features 100 stalls selling designer furniture and various products, retaining its former industrial style with characteristic red brick, windows, and trusses. It has won multiple awards from 1996 to 1999, such as the MIPIM, ULI, AIA Award, and City of Prague Award.
